Blog More Fresh and Crispy with blogmore?

It's been more than a year since I started to move my old WordPress blog to Hugo. Work stopped around August 2024, and I've just this week come back to it. However, I was getting frustrated by having to reclimb the steep learning curve the for Hugo and yesterday I discovered Dave Pearson's blogmore tool (https://blogmore.davep.dev) which seems much more straightforward. Blogmore is a tool, written in Python, that creates a static website, but without many of the complexities of Hugo and similar static website tools. It's designed to be simple and encourage blogging more.

I hope to relaunch Fresh and Crispy at blog.cpjobling.net and use blogmore to blog more!

To Be or Not to Be?

I've had a work blog, courtesy of my employer Swansea University, for a number of years, but rarely use it.

Instead, I tend to post most often in this personal blog.

So, at the start of this new year, a time for reflection and resolutions, I find myself asking myself should I keep this blog and start using it more systematically or should I abandon it?

In answering this, I suppose I intended my work blog to be a place for reflecting on my teaching and learning and to support my students taking my courses?

This blog was meant to be more personal, but in reality, takes on more of these work-related issues than my work blog does.

Should I, therefore, copy the posts over from my work blog to this blog, and have a single place to reflect? Or should I leave things as they are?

For an open practitioner (as I hope that I am) Is there an advantage in having separate work and personal blogs?

Are there disadvantages?

Which is the real me?

What do you think?

Giving up the Ghost

2016-09-18_1429-300x197Fresh and Crispy has been running as a self-hosted Ghost blog for a couple of years now but today I moved it back over to a self-hosted Wordpress blog.

One of the main reasons for the move is that upgrading the Ghost software is a painfully slow manual process. Other reasons include my desire to try technologies like Mike Caulfield's Wikity which needs a Wordpress multi-site and the sheer convenience of being able to blog from the Wordpress App.

To transfer my content, I had to use the Python script ghost2wp.py provided by tzangms to convert from Ghost's JSON format to WordPress's xmlrpc. But that went very smoothly.

The Ghost blog will stay active as ghost.cpjobling.me for a while: at least until I have transferred some of the tags over.

Summer school blogging exercise kicks off!

In about 45 minutes time (19.00 BST) I will be teaching some Engineering Summer School students how to register for, set up and use a Blogger.com group blog. Should be fun. The title link is to the support site.

The only fly in the ointment is that England’s Euro2004 Quarter Final against host nation Portugal kicks off at 19.45! Still, nanny has given us all permission to leave early, so hopefully we won’t miss much! In the mean-time, here’s the BBC pre-match report.

Balloon Blogging

Committed myself to contributing to Headstart and EESW (two summer schools that we run in the School of Engineering) … again! Subject of my bit this year will be Blogging (or more formally Using the Internet as a Research and Collaboration Tool. The idea is that I’ll give the students a potted introduction to the Internet, www, semantic web, rss, blogging etc and then get them to create group blogs focussed on high-performance ballooning (our Summer School topic). The beauty is that Blogger’s new features (including email submission of articles) provide a great way for the students to keep in touch with each other (and UWS of course) when they all disperse to their homes.

Also, as a side issue, I’m hoping that it’ll do a little bit to promote Blogging as a useful school activity.
